How this cost calculator works
Painting cost is the wall area times your rates. The calculator takes your room size, works out the paintable wall area (and ceiling if you tick it) minus doors and windows, and multiplies by the material and labor rates you enter:
material = wall area × your material rate per sq ft
labor = wall area × your labor rate per sq ft
total = material + labor + add-ons + tax
Typical US ranges (a starting point, not a quote)
| Part | Typical per sq ft of wall | What drives it |
|---|---|---|
| Material | $0.20–$0.50 | Paint quality, primer, number of coats, sundries |
| Labor | $1.00–$3.00 | Prep, coats, colour change, ceiling height, trim |
| Installed total | $1.20–$3.50 | All of the above, plus local rates |
These are national planning ranges, not a price for your room. The single biggest swing is prep: smooth walls needing one coat sit at the bottom, heavy patching with a colour change at the top. Enter your own quote for a number you can budget against.
What is separate
Trim, doors and windows are often priced on their own, as is moving furniture, major patching and ceiling work beyond a flat repaint — add the ones that apply above. For how much paint to buy, use the paint calculator and paint coverage per gallon.
How to estimate interior painting cost
- Enter your room size (or a known wall area) above, and tick the ceiling if you are painting it.
- Enter the material cost per square foot — paint, primer and sundries.
- Enter the labor cost per square foot you were quoted.
- Add trim, doors or repairs as separate line items if they apply.
- Enter your sales tax rate, then read the total as a budget from your inputs and confirm with real quotes.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to paint a room?
As a planning range, interior painting runs about $1.20–$3.50 per square foot of wall including materials and labor — roughly $0.20–$0.50/sq ft for paint, primer and sundries, and $1–$3/sq ft for labor. A 12 × 12 ft room with 9 ft walls (about 290 sq ft after openings, three walls) lands very roughly in the $350–$1,000 range. Prep, trim, ceilings and number of coats move it a lot, so enter your own rates above.
Does this quote my local painter?
No. It builds a total from the material and labor rates you enter. We show typical US ranges as a starting point, but painting prices vary widely by region, prep and finish — put in a real quote for a number you can budget on.
What drives painting labor cost?
Prep above all — patching, sanding, caulking and masking take time. Then number of coats, colour changes, ceiling height, cutting in around trim, and whether trim and doors are included. A fresh same-colour coat on smooth walls is cheap; a dark-to-light change with heavy prep is not.
How do I get the wall area?
Enter your room size above and it works out the wall area (minus doors and windows), or enter a known area. Remember wall area is much larger than floor area — see floor area vs paintable area. For gallons, use the paint calculator.
Should I include ceilings and trim?
Tick "include the ceiling" above to add it to the wall area. Trim and doors are often priced separately by painters — add them as a line item so the total reflects the real scope.
